Participated in the engagement of Monitors off Newport News, and capture of Norfolk, Va. At Fort Norfolk, Va., May to August, 1862, and Suffolk, Va., to September, 1862. Engaged at the battle of Antietam (twice wounded). Sergeant-Major 1st Delaware Volunteer Infantry, September, 1862. Engaged at the battle of Fredericksburg. Second Lieutenant 1st Delaware Volunteer Infantry, December, 1862. First Lieutenant 1st Delaware Volunteer Infantry, January, 1863. Aide-de-Camp to General Hays, commanding Brigade, 2d Corps, and engaged at the battle of Chancellorsville. Taken prisoner by the rebels, and confined at Libby Prison for one month, when he escaped. Engaged at the battle of Gettysburg, and action of Falling Waters. In Provost Marshal's office, N. Y. City, November, 1863, to September, 1864, when he resigned. First Lieutenant Ist Regiment, 85 Ist Army Corps (Hancock's). Commissary of Musters, Ist Army Corps, July to September, 1865. At Fort Federal Hill, Baltimore, Md.. Aidede-Camp to General Getty, and Assistant Inspector-General, District of Baltimore, Md., to January, 1866. Second Lieutenant 17th U. S. Infantry, February, 1866. First Lieutenant 17th U. S. Infantry, March, 1866. At Hart's Island, New York Harbor, to July, 1866. Galveston, Texas, to September, 1866; HIouston, to November, 1866, and Hempstead, to January, 1867. Transferred to 35th U. S. Infantry, September, 1866. Regimental Quartermaster, 35th U. S. Infantry, January, 1867. Depot Commissary, San Antonio, Texas, March, 1867, to April,1868. Transferred to 15th U. S.
