In 1939, Lincoln High School was established in order to alleviate the overcrowding and provide a better education to black high school students. Patton became principal at BTW as his predecessor, T. D. Marshall left to be the first principal at Lincoln.

T D Marshall, principal of B F Darrell School, Principal of the Evening School for Negroes. Mr. Marshall has more students enrolled in his school than any others Negro school in the city.
