GIRLS' HALL, TILLOTSON COLLEGE. ca 1900

1906

A Texas Church

This period is one filled with sorrow mingled, with gladness in that so many of our dear young people are moving in the direction of our Christian colleges to complete their training for usefulness. Most of ours go to our Tillotson College. We are always glad to have them go. They all work hard during vacation at any and every honorable thing, in order that they may return to school. We miss them much as helpers and as attendants upon our religious services and their general influence for the moral and intellectual uplift of the general public. Our very excellent church choir is practically suspended, much to the sorrow of everybody who always enjoyed their voices. Yet these young people must be educated if they are to fill the places God has for them in the world; and the spirit of our Church is to help them on into Christian education as fast as possible, notwithstanding it breaks up our congregations very much indeed. An unprecedented thing in the line of effort to educate the young took place here about two weeks ago. The wife of our senior deacon, after agreement between herself and husband, took their three daughters and went to Austin to work at housekeeping during the school year, that these girls may attend our Tillotson College. The family is poor in this world's goods save in character. The father is here at home struggling along as usual to aid them. He was a slave, and is now quite advanced in years.

Our Church stands out distinctly for Christian education. However lowly those may be whom we get hold of, Christian intelligence and Christian piety uplifts them.

While our older ones are going from us to school, the younger element coming on gives signs of much hopefulness for the future; and we are reaching out daily for all whom we may influence. We must save the boys and girls to-day that we may have the Christian men and women of to-morrow.

One of the young women of our church has been graduated from Tillotson College, and is now in her second year here doing successful work in one of our city schools. During this same period she has been our efficient Sunday-school superintendent and church clerk, to the perfect satisfaction of all.
