Major Lyman Bissell,, Eleventh Infantry

 

 

 

 

 

Capt. Lyman Bissell, a veteran of the Mexican War of 1847 also served in Texas and other western territories. He retired to become New Haven's first police chief and he was the father of Dr. E. L. Bissell, surgeon-general of Connecticut units in the Union Army.

Theresa Maria Skeels, daughter of Gideon and Mary Skeels, m. Lyman Bissell, of Milton, Ct., in 1835. Children :

Evelyn Lyman, M. D., b. Sept. 10, 1836, in Milton, Ct. He m . Sarah Melinda Noyes, of Woodbury, Nov. 23, 1865. She d. July 19, 1883, leaving a daughter. Bertha Wetmore Bissell, b. Sept. 17, 1870. Evelyn L. Bissell, M. D., was Surgeon Gen- eral of Connecticut in 1855.

Born in Connecticut. Appointed from Connecticut; First Lieutenant of Infantry, February 24, 1847; assigned to Ninth Infantry April 9, 1847; Captain September 8, 1847; honorably mustered out August 26, 1848; First Lieutenant, Ninth Infantry, March 3, 1855; regimental Quartermaster, September 1, 1858, to March 15, 1861; Captain March 15, 1861; Major, Eleventh Infantry, March 4, 1864; transferred to Twentyninth Infantry September 21, 1866; transferred to Eleventh Infantry March 15, 1869; retired December 31, 1870; died November 22, 1888.

Eleventh infantry, to be composed of the 24tA and 29fA regiments.—The 24th and 29th regiments, in the department of Texas, will be consolidated for service in that department, and will hereafter be known as the llth infantry. The field officers will be—Alvan C. Gillem, colonel; George P. Buell, lieutenant colonel; Lyman Bissell, major.
