David Abner was the nominee for Superintendent of Public Instruction at the1900 Republican state convention, and was on the Committee on Platform and, Resolutions at the 1916 Republican state convention. His father, David J. Abner, Sr., was also a prominent person in the Republican party.

FORT WORTH, May 23 The convention was well attended; one correspondent called it "the largest and whitest" Republican State convention held in many years. The convention came out for protective tariff, in the payment of the expenses of the Nation. 2. The so-called "trust and industrial" laws were condemned as legislation calculated to drive capital into hiding and deprive labor of an opportunity to make an honest and legitimate wage. 3. As a return to the English espionage and picketing system, the continued multiplication of officers and commissioners to "smell, probe, and report," was condemned by the convention. 4. That the "blowing hot and cold" policies of the administration cease and the honor of the flag at home and abroad be maintained persistently. 5. That the shiftless indecision of the present administration, re sulting in the loss of American lives on the high seas and in Mexico, be condemned and that an adequate army and navy be maintained by the United States. Additional Resolution The delegates to the National convention were instructed to vote for the reelection of MacGregor as National committeeman.
